Millionaire Moms

Joe sent me this article today in an email with the subject line, “you can do this, too!”  I’m pretty lucky to have someone who believes that I can handle it all.

In 2000, Knight-McDowell quit her teaching job to run Airborne full-time and to care for her newborn son. She praises motherhood for having helped prepare her for the more overwhelming moments: “As a working mom, very little about the business world could faze me, because it was less important than any family dramas,” she says.

Class of 2013 - Listen Up!

Leading the internship program at Weber Shandwick in Baltimore has been one of the most rewarding perks of my job.  I recently blogged about what it takes to stand out as a candidate in the digital market for Weber Shandwick’s Digital Blog, Social Studies.  Bookmark it, it’s a wealth of knowledge from the top digital minds in the industry.

8 Months Later…#blogfail

My first attempt at maintaining my very own blog was a failure…

Though, after attending BMore Fail last Friday, I am more forgiving of my “failures.”  The event was very interesting…a room full of the brightest people in Baltimore celebrating failure.  And really celebrating a concept that, in many cases, led to their successes.

Thinking about my failures - all roads, bumpy and smooth, have led me to a pretty amazing life.  The biggest letdowns of my life (SATs, former jobs, ex-boyfriends) all amounted to greatest wins of my life (Ellie and Joe).

So, I am ok that this blog was a bit of a failure.  And it may take me another 8 months to remember it exists…it could also end up being a great diary documenting the next chapters of my life.  Pass the Crackers and Crayons…

Just when I think Ellie is all Mechlinski - out comes the Chlada in her dancing!

“I water-boarded our toddler, LOL.”

Ellie bites.  It’s her way of saying “I love you” and it’s entirely our fault.  We have been biting her since she was born and we thoroughly enjoy it.  But now we need to stop because Ellie reciprocates by breaking skin.  So time to handle this with love…also, private parts are private.

Article: "What I wish parents knew"

Real Simple Magazine came out with an article offering tips from our kids’ “experts.”  To sum it up - don’t try to be perfect and don’t try to have the perfect kid.

But it’s ok not follow the advice either, clearly I turned out ok:

  • Go low-carb in the morning. As a child, “low-carb” wasn’t in our pantry.  I love you, Pop-Tart.
  • Don’t fight [their] battles. I was bullied and my mother served as my bodyguard (which ultimately led to more bullying…but, thanks to Facebook, I am ok with it now. I win.).
  • “No matter what level of expertise a parent has, he shouldn’t give his child coaching advice.” Thank goodness I didn’t play a sport.  My sisters did though – they were “jocks” [see “be careful with labels” tip]. I liked to sing and dance.
  • “Children who have responsibilities at home have the easiest time being responsible students.” So, there was a method to the all-day Saturday chore-day madness! We didn’t need to play outside and exercise with friends, we needed to become “responsible.”
  • Let your child fail. Whaaa? Fail is equivalent to another four-letter “f” word with an “up” on the end…

The Scary Mommy Manifesto

My new favorite guilty pleasure…ScaryMommy.com!

I shall not compete with the mother who effortlessly bakes from scratch, purees her own baby food, or fashions breathtaking costumes from tissue paper. Motherhood is not a competition. The only ones who lose are the ones who race the fastest.
